Election 2010: Where Things Stand with One Week to Go

The CBS News Critical Contests analysis continues to point to GOP gains - but just how many? Enough for House control? Here's what to watch in the final week:

(At left, Anthony Salvanto discusses the House outlook and national vote model on "Washington Unplugged")

House: Republicans need 39 net pickups to get control and they can get there with a combination of the seats in which they are favored, plus just a few of the remaining tossups races.

We show a net 33 seats they're now favored to gain, PLUS 25 more tossup races in Democratic seats remaining up for grabs. So if Republicans win in 6 of 25 tossups, and they also net the 33 where we see them favored today, that would give the GOP the House.

More broadly, the battle in final week hinges on many of the districts the Democrats took in '06 and '08 and on the gains they made with suburban and some rural independents in the last two cycles. If, come Election day, the GOP can roll back most of those gains, they would be in good position to win at least a narrow majority. If the Republicans see even more pickups than that, that scenario would probably be marked by a national two-party House vote of greater than 52%.

Watch early on for wins in the Northeast and New England (where Republicans are trying to make inroads into a Democratic-dominated area); an electorate a couple of points heavier than last midterm with older (65+) age voters; and if there's lower-than-expected turnout for Democrats in the urban portions of competitive districts.

Meanwhile, Democrats' hopes for stemming Republican gains and hanging on to their House majority probably rest on more than just driving up base turnout, but also on doing very well in their current tossup races and on better-than-expected showings among suburban voters - who comprise so many of the voters in these critical districts - and on whether they can keep the overall national House vote closer to even.

CBS News' 2010 National House Model: What Does the National House Vote Mean?

Senate: Republicans appear to head into the final week in good position to make gains. They need 10 net pickups to win control, but they'll still need a very good night to get that 10.

They are favored to pick up 5 - Indiana, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Arkansas and Wisconsin - and have another 4 Democratic seats engaged in tossup races (West Virginia, Illinois, Illinois, Nevada and Colorado).

Some of those like Colorado and Nevada still look tight right now, and there's some signs Pennsylvania may be tightening in the final push as well. If Republicans do take all four of those tossups and the five where they appear to have an edge, they'd need 1 of 3 other at-risk Democratic seats where Democrats are clinging to a current advantage (California, Connecticut and Washington) to make the ten needed.

Meanwhile, Republicans are currently favored - but not assured, of course - to hold their own at-risk seats of Florida, Missouri, New Hamshire, Kentucky and Ohio.

We should point out among those that the Kentucky race, which looks like it'll come down to the wire, on Election Night will be one of the early, key states to watch to see if the GOP can hold it and stay on track for their goal of Senate control.

Obama had to spend money or our economy would have collapsed partly due to Republican policies. I am not so worried about illegals and welfare people---as these can be dealt with. I am concerned that the very wealthy in this country are going to hijack our democracy and completely take it over. Democrats and honest Republicans must stand together or in the future there will be courses on the "Rise and Fall of the United States."

The question is, "Is the Fox Party adding quality leadership to the government, or will they get elected, and eventually ridiculed?"

Of course they will be ridiculed, that's the M.O. of the progressives. Rules for radicals is their game plan so why is that going to stop? If they can cut deficit spending, change the health care law so it actually lowers costs, and eliminate fraud and waste in a ballooning government, they deserve our support.

Obama Added More to the National Debt in his first 19 Months than all the Presidents from Washington Through Reagan Combined, Says Gov. Data. The Democrats are the party of welfare dwellers, illegal aliens, taxes (never met a tax or illegal alien they didn't like), protectors of the rights of criminals instead of their victims (soft on crime), the lazy, socialized medicine, druggies, Wall Street (Obama and the Dems recieved the most from Wall Street campaign contributions), Union thugs, ambulance chasing lawyers, etc. If you voted for Obama to prove you are not a racist....... what on earth will you do now to prove you are not stupid?

Gotta love the Reid Philosophy "He single handedly stopped a Depression" BUT he is not responsible for (Cannot control) his staffers actions nor - In particular one Diana Tejada his Hispanic Press secretary who worked for him from October 2008 until at least a month ago when she appeared in that official capacity. Now interestingly she was under investigation for a sham marriage from November 2008 until her sham marriage husband was deported in March 2010. She remained on his staff throughout the investigation even though she admitted in several instances to falsificatin of federal documents. OH YEAH that's the sort of person our Senate Leader Reid KEEPS on staff.

hey rightbehind: stop embarrassing yourself with your total lies and lack of knowledge. The housing crisis started in 2007 not 2006 and the DEMOS caused it to happen by not reforming Fannie Mae and Freddie Mack they blocked it since 2003 17 times. Also the demos were in control of both houses when the economic collapse happened because of the Freddie Mack and Fannie Mae night mare they caused to happen in 2008 the last few months if the Bush administration. This is all 100 % on the DEMOS and there is no way to argue with the facts of history!Try reading a few things about the history and causes of the collapse before spouting your DEMO propaganda!

Too Funny! The history books already have it recorded. If the republicans had done such a great job and created a Utopia why were they thrown out of both houses in 2006? LOL! The housing crisis was obviously economic engineering. I had a friend that worked as a mortgage broker. He told me he would walk in and tell his managers that these people couldn't afford these loans and he was told to make them anyway. The real money was to be made when the loan failed on the hedge fund or derivative payout.

An aide to the Senate majority leader repeatedly lied to federal agents and submitted false documents to Homeland Security to cover up her illegal seven-year marriage to Lebanese national, left, who was the subject of an Oklahoma terror investigation. I doubt CBS or MSNBC will be printing that story!

You folks in New York are very liberal, as is the radical NYT. However, face facts: Obama and the liberals in Congress, esp. Reid, Pelois and many others, have absolutely thrown our hard earned taxpayers money away. They are doing a darn good job of making this a socialist nation. Your children and their children will be paying for the Democrats' vast mistakes for years to come. And don't blame Bush as Obama has been doing for two and a half years (isn't that what 5 year olds do when they are doing something wrong and don't want to take the blame?). If the Dems stay in office, our nation's deficit will go up, up, up. China will own most of our nation. We are so very divided as never before, even before the civil war. We must change things in D.C. or we will fail as a nation. Think about this before you vote. Do you want a republic or a socialist country?

Democrats have a long way to go to catch up to republican spending. Republican presidents are responsible for 8.2 of this nations 13 trillion dollar debt. More than 98% of the wealth in this country is passed from one generation to the next. Those that don't inherit wealth would be smart to support the democrats if they want any future for themselves and their kids. If we don't restore this nation to what it was before we began the race to the bottom about thirty years ago. People will once again be servants, subjects, and slaves.

When Republicans stated that "we'll be back," they apparently meant it.

I'm going to laugh for months if it ends up draw. The chamber of commerce Chinese donors are spending 10 times as much for republican campaigns. They'll be licking their wounds for a long time.
